  • Difficulty chewing or speaking

Benefits of straightening your teeth may include:

  • Reduced risk of cavities
  • Help prevent gum disease
  • Improve confidence
  • And of course, improve your smile

Treatment Options that are not Traditional Braces

For adults looking to straighten their teeth there are a lot of options available that are not the ugly metal braces. Depending on the issue(s) that needs to be solved an Orthodontist or dentist may recommend any of the following to improve your smile.

Fixed Retainer

The use of bonded lingual retainers, often called fixed retainers, are mounted to the inside surface of the teeth to help prevent teeth from shifting over time. This is an option that only a trained doctor can install, remove or repair.

Removable Retainer

When people often think of retainers, they envision the kind that can be taken in and out the mouth and is made of plastic and wire. This type of retainer is called the Hawley retainer. They can be made for the upper and lower arches of the mouth to brace or straighten teeth. A portion of metal wire is visible around the teeth as it hooks around and on the teeth to provide stabilization.

Expanders

Orthodontists will use a metal bracket mounted to the upper arch (roof of the mouth) known as an expander to widen a narrow upper jaw. An expander is used to create the additional space needed to properly fit and align crowded and crooked upper teeth. This method is invisible, but patients patients can experience some discomfort each time an adjustment is made.

Appliances

Devices like the Herbst Appliance and headgear are often used to correct over and underbites. Many do not opt for headgear as it is exactly what it sounds like—headgear that has to be worn for a certain number of hours per day. The Herbst Appliance corrects jaw issues with metal extensions that are worn for upwards of a year.

Aligners

Used to move teeth and align jaws, clear aligners are a nearly invisible custom-made solution that effectively straightens teeth. Clear aligners are popular because they avoid the pitfalls of traditional metal braces, such as food restrictions and visibility issues. Orthodontists and dentists have been using this nearly invisible alternative to braces for decades to correct issues such as: overcrowding, slightly crooked teeth, gapped teeth to name a few.
